Felix Auger-Aliassime has shown off some stunning tennis this season, playing an incredible match against Medvedev down under despite losing eventually, and winning his first title in Rotterdam, swatting aside Tsitsipas in the final, showing his supremacy. Since then though, he had a very unfortunate sunshine double and an early loss at a smaller 250 last week. He looks ahead to a challenging clay courter in Lorenzo Musetti, and while FAA may be the favorite, clay is not his surface as he certainly looks vulnerable while he aims to stay in the draw at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Lorenzo Musetti got a hard-fought win over Benoit Paire, taking him down in 3 sets, showing off his clay court prowess. He has what it takes to upset FAA, playing an almost Federer-like game, simply lacking consistency. FAA hasn’t been looking great, and I think that if Musetti goes all out, he can outplay FAA from the back of the court with his heavy hitting and aggressive play, not allowing FAA to set up his shots and play that massive game of his. Let’s see if he can do it at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Lorenzo Musetti have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Both meetings came last season on the clay, with both matches going 3 sets. FAA can certainly win, but I think he’ll be lacking confidence despite his extraordinary start to the season, Musetti on the other hand has little to lose and will be happy to be back on clay. I think he’ll pull off the upset and book himself a place in the Round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
