Australian Open 2022: Iga Swiatek vs. Kaia Kanepi Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Iga Swiatek takes on Kaia Kanepi in the quarterfinal on Wednesday, January 26th, 2022.

The youngest player in the draw Iga Swiatek will square off against the oldest player remaining in the women’s draw. Who will reach the semifinals of the 2022 Australian Open? Let us breakdown the first meeting between these two players.

Iga Swiatek showed patience and resilience to defeat an inspired Sorana Cirstea in three sets. Admittedly, Swiatek does not have a pretty good record from losing the first set in her short career. She won just three matches in 2021 fighting back from dropping the opening set and had to reassure herself things would get back on track while trailing Cirstea. The Romanian was living up to the reputation as the ultimate dark horse, having garnered victories over the likes of Petra Kvitova and Anastasia Pavyluchenkova en route to the Round of 16 of the Australian Open. But Swiatek dug deep to avoid an upset and recovered to take the next two sets. She sets up a meeting against a player who is nearly twice her age in Kaia Kanepi.

At 36, Kaia Kanepi proved it is never too late to reach an Australian Open quarterfinal. The Estonian veteran got the better of second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the late-night power-hitting contest. Kanepi dropped the first set against the run of play, but got her nose in front at the start of the second set when she broke Sabalenka’s serve. She widened the gap by getting an insurance break before serving successfully to level. An erratic Sabalenka finished the match with 15 double faults and 46 unforced errors in total, as she planted a routine backhand on match point to cede the deciding set. She eyes another scalp in the form of Iga Swiatek.

Iga Swiatek and Kaia Kanepi will lock horns for the first time on Wednesday. Kanepi admitted in her post-match interview that she doesn’t know what to expect out of the Pole’s racket having not watched any of Swiatek’s matches this fortnight. Swiatek, it should be said, is playing something close to peak level at the 2022 Australian Open. Kanepi will attempt to overpower Swiatek, but I expect the 20-year-old to have a lot of success in taking charge of baseline rallies. The young Pole has quicker feet and more reliable game from the back of the court than her Estonian opponent.
