TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Barbora Krejcikova takes on Madison Keys in the quarterfinal on Tuesday, January 25th, 2022.
Barbora Krejcikova reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time in singles, and recent history suggests she could be unstoppable. Will she halt Madison Keys’ stirring run? Krejcikova might benefit from playing Azarenka – a power-hitting opponent in the same mold as Keys.
Barbora Krejcikova defeated two-time former champion Victoria Azarenka to reach the quarterfinals of the 2022 Australian Open. She had never gone beyond the second round in her two previous main draw appearances prior to this year. But the Czech was in fine fettle in dismissing the Belarusian 6-2 6-2 in just 85 minutes. Azarenka was visibly hampered by what appeared to be a neck injury at the start of the second set and called for an on-court medical time-out. But despite her best efforts to wrestle control of the match, she was outmaneuvered by Krejcikova who tallied 23 winners. The Czech will next face big-hitting Madison Keys.
Madison Keys, meanwhile, continues to upstage her opponents at the 2022 Australian Open. She defied the odds to eliminate one of the pre-tournament favorites in Paula Badosa. She bulldozed her way past the Spaniard with a power-hitting display that will send shockwaves across the women’s section of the draw. Keys outperformed Badosa in almost every department. She hit 26 winners to her opponent’s 10, was more clinical in her break point conversion and only dropped serve once in the whole match. She is now seeking to post back-to-back top-10 wins when she takes on Barbora Krejcikova.
Barbora Krejcikova has never played Madison Keys at any level on tour. Both players are in scintillating form. I continue to reiterate, maybe facing Azarenka could in turn be a very good preparation for Krejcikova. But granted the Belarusian was far from 100% healthy, it was a very professional performance by Krejcikova who never lost sight of the road. This is will be tight, but the Czech’s nous and variety should counter Keys’ power.
