TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Cristian Garin in the third round on Saturday, May 28th, 2022.
Andrey Rublev could have his hands full when he takes on Chilean No. 1 Cristian Garin in the third round of the French Open. Will the Russian’s power be sufficient to tame Garin’sretrieval skills? Or will the unseeded underdog reach the fourth round for the second year in a row? Let us take a look at this match preview in detail.
Andrey Rublev needed to be on his toes on Thursday as he eased his way past Argentina’s clay-court specialist Federico Delbonis. Rublev came storming back after dropping the second set, but ultimately came through in four sets, just like in his opening match against Kwon. The Russian took the ball early on the rise, which is not a particularly easy thing to do against the high topspin of Delbonis and utilized his extra zip and power in his shots to outmuscle the Argentine lefty and book his spot in third round of Roland Garros for the second time.
Cristian Garin, meanwhile, continues to slay those below him as he recorded his very own four-set win against Belarus’ IlyaIvashka. Despite dropping the third set, victory was never in doubt as the Chile’s No. 1 was far too polished in the crucial moments in the match, breaking his opponent four times and winning 74% first-serve points. Garin is now one match away from reaching the fourth round of the French Open for the second year in a row. Can he produce a shock win against the number seven seed Andrey Rublev?
Andrey Rublev owns a 2-0 head-to-head record over CristianGarin. Rublev won both matches in the 2019 season, at Wimbledon and Hamburg. Garin is unlikely to overpowerRublev, but he is a workhorse and tends to step up his game on his beloved clay courts. The problem that Garin faces is that Rublev is unlikely to give him time to dictate rallies. And given Garin’s struggles against hyper-aggressive ball strikers, we don’t envisage an underdog win.
