Madrid Open 2022: Diego Schwartzman vs. Grigor Dimitrov Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Open as Diego Schwartzman takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the second round on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022.

Diego Schwartzman has not lost a clay-court match before the quarterfinal at any tournament this season. But that record will be under immense danger when he takes on Grigor Dimitrov at the Madrid Open. The two players will clash for the first time since the 2017 season, so who will come out on top?

Diego Schwartzman looked to be cruising in his first round match against Frenchman Benoit Paire. He played a clinical first set in which he broke his opponent twice and dropping just four points behind his first serve. But Paire managed to keep Schwartzman at bay in the second set and forced a tiebreak. Schwartzman lost two successive points on his serve and Pairetook full advantage, going on to wrap up the set and level the match. But that was just a momentary lapse in concentration as the diminutive Argentine was in full throttle in the decider romping to take it 6-1.

Grigor Dimitrov, meanwhile, improved on his previous two first-round exits at the Madrid Open. The Bulgarian World No. 20 withstood a barrage of aces and volleys to tame the big-serving Maxime Cressy 6-2 7-6. Dimitrov also earned his revenge against the American having lost to him in their only previous meeting which came at the Melbourne Summer Set in January. The 30-year-old is a former quarterfinalist in Madrid, but he hasn’t won a second-round match there since 2017. So can he snap that run when he takes on Diego Schwartzman?

Diego Schwartzman and Grigor Dimitrov have played three times on the ATP Tour, with Dimitrov leading the head-to-head 2-1. The Bulgarian won their last meeting at the 2017 Wimbledon in straight sets. But it is pertinent to note that Schwartzman won their only clay-court meeting in that chaotic final in Istanbul in 2016. Schwartzman has saved his best season for the dirt this season which is why he should be the favorite to win on Wednesday.
