TennisSection previews the 2021 Hamburg Open as Jan-Lennard Struff (7) meets Laslo Djere in the First Round on Tuesday, July 13th 2021.
Will Laslo Djere be able to get a very big win under his belt to find some confidence which he did not have on the grass courts this year? Will Jan-Lennard Struff show us his superb game as he aims to be a dark horse in this tournament? Both players can win this match on their day, but only one will make it to the Second Round here at the 2021 Hamburg Open. Who will it be?
Laslo Djere will be looking to find his best tennis again as he did not have an easy time on grass courts this year, going 1-2 in his matches and not showing us the consistency which we usually see him play with in the early rounds of smaller tournaments. Laslo is underrated in my opinion, with a strong baseline game which is able to rally for a while and be patient. Laslo Djere will want to use that to his advantage, especially on clay here at the 2021 Hamburg Open. However, he meets a very tough opponent right from the start in Jan-Lennard Struff.
Jan-Lennard Struff had an even harder time on the grass courts this year, going 1-3 in all of his matches. However, Jan-Lennard will take a lot of pride in his 1 win, as this came in straight sets against Daniil Medvedev. Jan-Lennard is not really suited for grass courts, where the ball bounces low. Struff is much more at ease on clay and hard courts where he can hit his amazing forehand at incredible heights and speed. Struff will know that he has a tough start against Laslo Djere, but he will also be confident in his game and the fact that if he’s at his best he can hurt anyone here at the 2021 Hamburg Open.
Jan-Lennard Struff and Laslo Djere have met 2 times before, with Jan-Lennard Struff leading the head to head 2-0. They met both times in 2019 on hard and on grass. Since then, they have been at a similar level in terms of form and consistency, but I think that the edge will be with Struff coming into this match. On clay, the ball can bounce quite high with a lot of spin, and Struff likes that because he is a tall guy with amazing power behind his shots. Djere will have to be amazing on his return, and hope Struff is bad on his serve, which I don’t see happening. It might be tight as it’s the first clay match for both in a few months, but Jan-Lennard Struff will make his way to the Second Round of the 2021 Hamburg Open.
