TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Alize Cornet takes on Danielle Collins in the quarterfinal on Wednesday, January 26th, 2022.
This is turning out to be a fortnight to remember for France’s Alize Cornet who reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam at the 63rd attempt. As ridiculous as that sounds, it is not beyond the realms of reality that she could go even further. Will she overcome the power-hitting Danielle Collins on Wednesday and reach the last four of the Australian Open?
Alize Cornet produced one of the finest wins of her career to reach the last eight of the 2022 Australian Open. The Frenchwoman overcame the number 14 seed Simona Halep who was riding on an eight-match winning streak since the turn of the year in a thrilling contest. Under the scorching Melbourne sun, Cornet needed three match points to close out the Romanian before bursting into tears. Cornet has hinted this could be her last year on the professional tour as she intends to hang up her racket. But could she be on the cusp of one glorious swansong in Melbourne before bringing the curtain down?
Danielle Collins should have a lot to say about it. Collins, who is a seasoned campaigner since she burst onto the scene on the senior tour a few years ago, is looking to reach a second semifinal at the Australian Open. She defeated Belgium’s Elise Mertens in three sets. Her aggression and intensity got the better of the number 19 seed and puts her with shout at reaching the last four. Can she overcome the wily Alize Cornet?
Alize Cornet and Danielle Collins have not played each other at any level. Most of the time, you simply cannot write the script as far as women’s tennis is concerned. For the case of Alize Cornet, this mesmeric run to her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open has been jaw-droppingly deserved. Sometimes in tennis, there is not really a perfect end to a glorious career. However, Cornet might still have a lot to smile about for this week and beyond. She is on course to break the consecutive Grand Slam appearance record by the end of the year, but I am inclined to believe she may have very little left in the tank to outlast Collins. She played a brutal match against Halep under stifling heat. The American should be the heavy favorite.
