TennisSection previews the 2021 Rome Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas (5) meets Matteo Berrettini (9) in the Round of 16 on Thursday May 13th, 2021.
A titanic battle is upon us at the 2021 Rome Open, as fifth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece will face ninth seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini in the Round of 16. This is potentially the match of the tournament, as these two men are in red-hot form at the moment, playing some of the best tennis of their careers. Will it be the Monte-Carlo champion Tsitsipas getting the win here over the Madrid Finalist Berrettini? One thing is for sure, some spectacular tennis will be on display here and tennis fans will not want to miss this one.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently ranked a career-high #5 in the ATP world rankings, and has been having a career year thus far in 2021. The Greek star has been ultra-consistent here, with a string of deep runs at most tournaments he has played. Tsitsipas finally had his breakthrough ATP-1000 win at the Monte-Carlo Masters, stunning Rafael Nadal en route to the title. This has seemingly given him the belief that he can win these major tournaments, and in this scorching form he is a major contender for the title here at the 2021 Rome Open. Tsitsipas destroyed veteran Marin Cilic in the Second Round, but his opponent here Matteo Berrettini will pose a huge challenge. The Italian is in red-hot form, winning a title and reaching the Madrid Final in recent weeks. This is sure to be a blockbuster match between two of the very best players in the world.
Matteo Berrettini is currently ranked #9 in the world and is in the form of his life at the moment. After a poor start to the year he has been in phenomenal form over the past few weeks, winning the title in Belgrade and then reaching his first ATP-1000 Final in Madrid. He will have taken a lot of confidence from that performance, and has built some serious momentum. His serving has been dominant, and his forehand is among the biggest in the world. In this sort of form he is extremely hard to beat, but is now coming up against the current leader in the Race to Turin, Stefanos Tsitsipas. Win or lose, Berrettini is sure to put up a tremendous performance and while he is the underdog, he has a very real chance of causing the upset and advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Rome Open.
This will be the second meeting between the two players, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head series 1-0. They last played at the 2019 Australian Open, with the Greek star winning in four tight sets. This match is likely to be the most exciting of the tournament thus far, and amazing tennis is expected. They are both playing at an extremely high level, and while it is very tough to pick a winner I am going with Tsitsipas here. Matteo Berrettini has been outstanding over the past month, but it seems that fatigue is a slight factor for him, and if he is not at 100% then he will struggle to defeat his Greek opponent. A very high level of tennis will be on display between two of the best shotmakers on tour, but Stefanos Tsitsipas will come out on top, advancing to yet another Quarter-Final here at the 2021 Rome Open.
