TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Taylor Fritz meets Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the First Round on Monday, August 16th, 2021.
The Cincinnati Open 2021 kicks off this weekend and there are some very intriguing First Round matches on display, with the one between American Taylor Fritz and the Spanish veteran Albert Ramos-Vinolas being no exception. Both men are highly experienced players on the ATP Tour and will not go down without a fight. Fritz is the obvious favorite here due to the surface, but he has struggled lately. Can the Spaniard take advantage and cause the early upset?
Taylor Fritz is unseeded here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open and is currently ranked #40 in the ATP world rankings. The young American has been in mixed form lately, and has had some very strange results. After a slow start to the season he seemed to be getting back to his best by reaching back to back Semi-Finals at the Los Cabos Open and Atlanta, but then shockingly lost in the First Round at the Washington Open and Toronto Open, both to unfancied opponents. His big serve and forehand make him well-equipped to do well on this surface, but his confidence would have taken a hit after those losses. He is up against a tough First Round opponent here in Albert Ramos-Vinolas, and will have to be at his best if he is to advance here on home soil at the Cincinnati Open.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas is ranked #48 on the ATP Tour, and like his opponent Taylor Fritz is unseeded here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open. The Spaniard is a very experienced player but favors the clay surface more. Like his opponent he comes into this event in very inconsistent form over the past few months, reaching the Semis in Umag before First Round losses in Kitzbuhel and Toronto. He will be eager to get his season back on track but will be up against it here, as Taylor Fritz is a very strong hard court player, and playing at home in the United States. Ramos-Vinolas is a solid player, but his lack of a weapon will be exposed on these hard courts and he will have to rely on his consistency and tactical acumen to get him through here at the Cincinnati Open.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the American leading the head to head series 2-1. Predictably, his two wins have been on hard courts, and Ramos-Vinolas’ win was on clay earlier this year. Interestingly, they met in January at the US Open and it was a tough four set battle, so the Spaniard can take some heart from that and knows he will have a chance despite the surface. With all things being considered, I am going to back Taylor Fritz to win here. Both men are very close in the rankings and are in similar form, but taking the surface into consideration I must give the American the advantage. Albert Ramos-Vinolas is a solid player but he will struggle with his opponent’s big serve and explosive groundstrokes on this quicker surface. Taylor Fritz should win a tight one here and advance to the Second Round here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
