TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Lorenzo Sonego takes on Kevin Anderson in the Round of 64 on Sunday, October 10th, 2021.
Will Lorenzo Sonego move on? Will Kevin Anderson pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we will see if a top ranked next-gen can still get through a veteran. Who will move onto the Round of 32 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Lorenzo Sonego has had a pretty good year, he had a tough loss in San Diego, being ousted by eventual champion Casper Ruud. He has a pretty complete game, mostly trying to use his power and natural finesse to win points. He has a great opportunity to get through here in Kevin Anderson. I think the main thing is for him to return really well, and not just because of Anderson’s serve. I just feel as if in general his return is a weaker part of his game, if he is able to do that then I really don’t see him losing this match. Let’s see if Sonego can show us that high level that we know he has to move on here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Kevin Anderson played a great match to set up this meeting with Lorenzo Sonego, granted, Thompson has been playing some very low tennis for his level. Still, Anderson served beautifully, and while it’s unlikely that he can win against the young Italian, he will probably be able to prolong the sets and get a few opportunities coming his way. If Sonego is able to land some returns though, and Anderson doesn’t make a ton of first serves, then I’m thinking even a tiebreaker will be unlucky. The match will mostly rely on the result of both of their serving, as it often is like with players who mostly rely on their serve, and at this stage in his career, that’s most certainly Anderson. Let’s see if he can push Sonego for a spot in the Round of 32 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Lorenzo Musetti and Kevin Anderson have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. The two have never met before, and if Anderson was younger, I feel like he could beat Sonego, as he doesn’t have the best return and doesn’t have enough versatility in his aggression to take him out easily. However, Anderson is not younger, and Sonego still is a pretty aggressive player, so while Sonego could experience some turbulence, ultimately, I feel like Sonego will take charge and serve very consistently as well as being able to take advantage of some second serves and score some key opportunities to head through here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
