TennisSection previews the 2021 Us Open as Garbine Muguruza takes on Donna Vekic in the Round of 128 on Monday, August 30th, 2021.
Will Garbine Muguruza go through? Will Donna Vekic pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see if Muguruza has the level to be a top contender for the title. Who will move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open?
Garbine Muguruza hasn’t had a great summer so far, especially if we focus on the North American hard court swing, where she struggled to win many matches in Toronto and Cincinnati. While she is not playing her best tennis, top players and especially that of former grand slam champions always step up their levels for the slams, so Muguruza should definitely be feeling confident going into this match against Donna Vekic, as Vekic has done worse than she has so far in those two respective tournaments, getting knocked out in the second round of qualifying in one of them. Due to this, Muguruza seems to be in slightly better shape, and with her being a grand slam champion, she should be able to take the win here at the 2021 US Open. I think it will mostly depend on the way that she serves, as that was one aspect of her game that was lacking in previous weeks.
Donna Vekic has had a less than favorable season in general, however also did not perform the way she would have liked to in Toronto and Cincinnati. While she is serving alright, she isn’t making too many shots, and she isn’t defending very well at the moment. Both of those things could be attributed to a mental thing, particularly the first one. She will want to try and hit some heavier balls to really throw off Muguruza, especially if she can mix it up to both wings and off of both wings. If she is able to do this successfully, along with serve well, then despite her opponent being the clear favorite in this match I think she will have a chance, and I also definitely think she can take a set at the very least assuming all goes well with that strategy at the 2021 US Open.
Garbine Muguruza and Donna Vekic have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Vekic took their first win, in two tiebreakers about 7 years ago, while Murugurza won their second meeting three years ago on the clay courts of Madrid in three sets. Despite both meetings being very different in circumstance to this match, we know the players will be familiar with each other, and that the match could get close, especially if Vekic brings a high level. It will most certainly be an interesting encounter, but Muguruza should be able to raise her level at the right moments and move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open.
