TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Andrey Rublev (5) meets Marton Fucsovics in the Round of 16 on Monday July 5th, 2021.
An interesting match awaits us at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as fifth seeded Russian Andrey Rublev meets Marton Fucsovics of Hungry. The two men have already played a whopping seven times in their short careers, with four of those taking place this year. While this may seem like a one sided match on paper, the surface may make it a bit more interesting than many expect. Can the unseeded Hungarian cause the upset and defeat Rublev for the first time this year here at Wimbledon?
Andrey Rublev is currently ranked #7 in the world rankings and is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Russian has been dominant on the ATP Tour over the past few seasons but there were some doubts about his ability on grass due to his relative lack of experience. He has surprisingly adapted well to the surface however, and other than surprisingly dropping the first set to Federico Delbonis in the First Round has hardly set a foot wrong. After a convincing win over Lloyd Harris, he defeated the dangerous Fabio Fognini to set up this clash with Marton Fucsovics in the Round of 16. While he is the favorite here he will know the strengths of the Hungarian will be magnified on this faster court, and he will have to be careful.
Marton Fucsovics is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and is ranked #48 on the ATP Tour. The Hungarian is an extremely solid player who struggles with focus and consistency at times, and he really is a better player than his ranking suggests. He has caused two upsets so far, in the First Round over Jannik Sinner and again in the Third Round over Diego Schwartzman. He dominated the Argentine in particular, overpowering him from the baseline and leaving him with no chance. He won over 70% of his service points, something that will be necessary here. He is the clear underdog here against Andrey Rublev but on this quick surface he has to like his chances at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Rublev leading the head to head 4-1. All four of those victories have been this year, and he certainly has dominated the matchup. However, this match being on grass does make it a bit more interesting, and I do think that that helps Marton Fucsovics a bit as his game is a bit better suited to the surface. Despite that, I still expect Andrey Rublev to win this match, but it won’t be as comfortable as it usually is. Rublev is too talented to not figure the surface out, and his serve and powerful groundstrokes are massive weapons on this quick surface. Rublev will win here, and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
