Both men were not expected to reach this stage in the competition but have played some fantastic tennis so far and fully deserve to be here. This match is between the veteran Aussie Millman and the fast-rising young American Brooksby who are both in good form and highly motivated to improve their rankings here. Who will get the win and advance to the Semi-Finals at the Citi Open?
John Millman is currently ranked #43 on the ATP Tour and is the eleventh seed here at the 2021 Washington Open. The Aussie has built a reputation of being a ferocious and hardworking competitor, who never backs down from a challenge. The Aussie has a very solid baseline game without any major weapons, and his extensive experience will be invaluable here against his young opponent Jenson Brooksby. He has won both his matches in straights so far here at the Citi Open, having overcome Elias Ymer and Reilly Opelka in two tough sets apiece. Millman is seeking to reach his first Final of the season and enters this match against Brooksby as the favorite, but would be wise to not underestimate his promising opponent.
Jenson Brooksby is unseeded here at the 2021 Washington Open and is ranked #130 in the ATP world rankings. The young American has been one of the most promising newcomers this year and is truly having a breakout season. After winning three Challenger Tour titles on the year he took it a step further by reaching his maiden ATP Final in Newport, narrowly losing to Kevin Anderson. He has carried that form and momentum into this event, and is coming off a stunning 6-3, 6-4 upset win over world number 15 Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Round of 16. In addition, he has scored major wins over Anderson and Frances Tiafoe in the earlier rounds to set up this clash with John Millman. While he is the underdog, his confidence is sky-high and it would not be surprising if Brooksby was to win here.
This will be the second meeting between the two players, with Millman leading the head to head 1-0. He won their only encounter but that was back in 2018 and has no real bearing on this match. I expect a long and close battle, and I am giving the edge to the Aussie here. Experience is vital when it comes to close matches, especially late in tournaments. Jenson Brooksby has been fantastic this year and big things are in his future, but the smart money is on John Millman here. He will do just enough to get the win here, advancing to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open.
