TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Alexander Zverev (4) meets Tennys Sandgren in the Round of 64 on Thursday, July 1st 2021.
Will Tennys Sandgren shock us all and put on a superb performance to knock out a top seed early? Will Alexander Zverev build on his strong opening round performance here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships? This will be an interesting encounter as Sandgren can sometimes ruffle some feathers, but only one will make their way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Who will it be?
Tennys Sandgren came through a tight 4-set match in the Round of 128 against Norbert Gombos, beating him 6-4/6-7/6-1/6-3. Once Tennys found his rhythm on the grass, he was able to dictate play and eventually get the win. Tennys Sandgren is not really known for being consistent or strong in most tournaments, but sometimes he does pop out at Grand Slams and makes his way to the 4th Round of Quarter-finals. Now that he meets Alexander Zverev, Tennys will have to raise his level drastically if he wants to have any chance of causing the upset here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Alexander Zverev dominated in his Round of 128 match against Tallon Griekspoor, beating him in straight sets 6-3/6-4/6-1. Alexander Zverev will be very happy with that performance and he will be wanting to use that confidence and momentum to get himself far here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Alexander Zverev has been performing well at Grand Slams recently, making it very far in his last few, and I am sure he will want to minimise his time on court in these early rounds, such as against Tennys Sandgren, to save the vital energy for more important matches down the line.
Alexander Zverev and Tennys Sandgren have met 1 time before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 1-0. They met 4 years ago where Zverev won 7-5/7-5. I think that Tennys Sandgren will definitely come out here ready to give it his best, and he might even get one set to a tiebreak. However, from what I saw from Alexander Zverev in his opening round match, I don’t see him losing here, I see him dominating this match. I expect for Zverev to cruise here and make his way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
