TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Alexei Popyrin takes on Brandon Nakashima in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021.
Will Alexei Popyrin get a win under his belt? Will Brandon Nakashima continue his good form? Monday’s match will make for an interesting one, as we have two youngsters going head to head. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Washington Open?
Alexei Popyrin is coming into this match as the underdog, considering the two player’s results in Atlanta. While Brandon Nakashima reached the final, Popyrin flew out in the first round in straight sets. It’ll be tough for him, but this guy is seriously talented, and he can definitely win with his enormous game. But he still has lots of improving to do before he’s able to reach that level of consistency. With his enormous serve and groundstrokes, he’s able to blow opponents off the court using incredible power, he needs to increase his confidence levels though before he’s able to consistently compete with the big boys.
Brandon Nakashima is coming into this tournament with a ton of confidence, having just reached two atp finals. He is definitely the favorite here just considering recent form, but Popyrin’s game is very powerful, which may be something that Brandon will struggle against. It’s hard to tell, however, he still is the favorite as it’s very rare for players to have specific match-up issues. If Alexei Popyrin makes some unforced errors, than Brandon can probably step into the court a little and make it hard for his opponent to attack him, allowing him to get many points that way.
Alexei Popyrin and Brandon Nakashima have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Like mentioned earlier, it could be a tough match-up if Popyrin is able to place a lot of first serves and play some first strike tennis, which is what he’ll need to do quite a bit, today and in the future. But if he doesn’t, and he probably will not, Brandon will be able to step into the court and move Alexei around, so assuming the Atlanta Open does not affect him, he should still continue his great form leading into this one. Let’s see who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Washington Open.
