TennisSection previews the 2021 St Petersburg Open as Roberto Bautista Agut takes on Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals on Friday, October 29th, 2021.
Will Roberto Bautista Agut get the win? Will Marin Cilic pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup with two famous players. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2021 St Petersburg Open?
Roberto Bautista Agut got a great win over McDonald to set this tough meeting up with Marin Cilic. He historically hasn’t done to well against him, and it makes sense considering how hard and flat Cilic likes to strike the ball compared to RBA. Still, Cilic has not been playing good this year, and has only upped his level on the indoor hard swing these last couple of weeks. RBA is the clear favorite, simply due to results in the last couple of years, but Cilic does have it in him to beat Bautista Agut. Still, RBA has the ranking he does for a reason, and Cilic has been shaky, so I think he’ll tough it out in three sets as he fights for a spot in the semifinals at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Marin Cilic got a fantastic win to upset Khachanov and set up another tough meeting with Roberto Bautista Agut. The two have met a lot, and Cilic has the favorable matchup. However, at this point in their careers, RBA has been in much better form for the last couple of years. Cilic very well could pull off the upset, considering he took out Khachanov and they’re playing on a quick court. Still, RBA has the ability to step up his groundstroke game to be hard and flat and aggressive, he just typically doesn’t. I expect him to wear Cilic down a lot, but it will be a close one as the two clash for a place in the final four at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Roberto Bautista Agut and Marin Cilic have met seven times before, with Roberto Bautista Agut leading the head to head 5-2. Their meetings have gone back 7 years, with Cilic having the edge most of the time, he is a better fast court player, and those are the courts they have played on. While this court is a quick one, Cilic isn’t playing the way he used to. RBA is a pretty versatile player, and if he can dig into the return games of Cilic, then I think he can put on a lot of pressure and really trouble Cilic. I do expect him to get through this one, but I think he’ll just clinch it out of Cilic’s grasp as the two fight for a spot in the semifinals at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
