Alcaraz vs Rune Prediction

We have a very interesting matchup in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon as two of the ATP’s newest stars battle for a spot in the semifinal. Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, needed to find a higher gear to down a resurgent Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in just over three hours to reach the quarterfinals at the All England Club for the first time. Berrettini served very well and executed his sliced backhand to perfection, and won nine of 12 net points in the first set.

But Alcaraz quickly got into the match, saving a break point at the start of the second set, and would not drop a single service game in the next three sets. He finished the match with 35 winners to 23 unforced errors and won 79% first-serve points.

Holger Rune, meanwhile, upset former Wimbledon semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 in three hours and 24 minutes. Dimitrov had the chance to move into a two-sets-to-love lead, but couldn’t withstand Rune’s weight of shot and tactical brilliance, and the Dane was the better player in the most important moments in the match.

Like, Alcaraz, Rune will also be contesting a first quarterfinal at Wimbledon. It’s not a great surprise, since both players enjoyed decent spells at Queen’s in the tuneup tournament. Alcaraz continues to hit the ball as big as on any other surface and his serve has stood the test of times. Rune will certainly pose plenty of questions behind the return and he’ll likely generate multiple break point chances. But we like Alcaraz to edge this one. He’s overall, the solid baseliner and the man with a higher ceiling.
