Svitolina vs Vondrousova Prediction
It’s developing into some story for Elina Svitolina, who is two wins away from becoming the third wildcard in history to win a grand slam. The Ukrainian only returned to action in early April from a maternity break, but not a sentient being would have predicted Svitolina to hit the ground running after losing a low-key W60 ITF match to a player outside the world’s top 200.
Svitolina reached the quarterfinals at the French Open last month playing with a protected ranking. But her run at SW19 outmatches her achievement at Roland Garros by some margin. Svitolina has defeated four Grand Slam champions in singles (Venus, Kenin, Azarenka, and Swiatek), and one doubles major champion (Mertens) to make the semis.
Despite being out of action for over a year, her battling qualities and talents were not lost on her, and I think we’ve seen a very different version of Svitolina in the last couple of weeks to the one we saw in the first phase of her career. The current one is aggressive, wants to end points on her own terms and her optimism is through the roof. She’ll be tested though by the rampant Czech lefty Marketa Vondrousova.
The former French Open finalist is looking to experience the centre stage for a second time. She’s managed to take a few important scalps along the way. Vondrousova defeated Kudermetova and Vekic, who both reached a grass-court final coming to Wimbledon. Then she eked out three-set wins over Bouzkova and fourth seed Jessica Pegula – the latter coming from a 1-4 down in the third set to win.
Frankly, this is a tough call as these two players snuck under the radar at the Championships. You could make a case that Svitolina has had a more impressive run here, showcasing her resilience and never-say-die attitude in almost every match. Lest we forget, she’s also extra motivated to put smiles on the faces of her countrymen and women in the current turbulent times back home. At her absolute pomp, she never made a grand slam final, but this meteoric comeback feels too good to ignore.
