TennisSection previews the 2021 Miami Open as Bianca Andreescu (8) meets Amanda Anisimova (28) in the Third Round on Sunday March 28th, 2021.
This is set to be an exciting match between two young stars of the WTA Tour. Eighth seeded Canadian Bianca Andreescu will face Amanda Anisimova of the United States in the Third Round here at the 2021 Miami Open and it is certain to be an entertaining match. Both ladies have not been at their best in recent times and will be hoping that this event is the one that turns their fortunes around. Will it be the former US Open champion Andreescu advancing here? Or can the talented American teen cause the upset?
Bianca Andreescu is currently ranked #9 in the world, and has been as high as #4 a couple of years ago. Only recently returning to the tour after a very long injury lay-off, she has not fully shaken off her rust and regained her fitness. Despite this, she is still a very capable player and is one of the most fearsome ball-strikers on the WTA Tour. She has looked impressive so far here at the 2021 Miami Open, defeating Tereza Martincova in straight sets in her opening match. She served extremely well, something that will be important against Amanda Anisimova who is a great returner. The Canadian isn’t moving as well as she once did, which is to be expected after knee surgery. She enters this match as the slight favorite, but given her recent struggles it certainly won’t be easy.
Nineteen year old phenom Amanda Anisimova has long been touted as a future superstar of the WTA Tour. Currently ranked #32 in the world rankings, she was once as high as #21 and will be aiming to break into the top 20 for the first time. This is only her third match of the 2021 season, after some minor injuries and catching COVID-19 derailed the start of her year. She was hugely impressive in her win over Sloane Stephens, destroying the former top 10 player 6-3, 6-3 with a fantastic display of power hitting. The young American served very well but was particularly outstanding from the baseline, seemingly hitting winners at will. If she can keep this form up, she is very capable of causing the minor upset here over Bianca Andreescu at the 2021 Miami Open.
This is shaping up to be a very close match between the two young stars. They have never faced each other before on the WTA Tour, and their head to head stands at 0-0. While Bianca Andreescu is higher ranked, Amanda Anisimova is fully capable of winning here and it is very tough to predict a winner. What makes it even more difficult to predict is the fact that both women have not had much match practice under their belts, and we don’t have much indication of their form. All things considered, I am going with Amanda Anisimova to win this match in three sets. It really can go either way, but she was particularly outstanding in her win over Sloane Stephens and her confidence will be very high. Both women to win a set is probably a good shout, and I expect the young American to have the edge here and advance to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Miami Open.
