Rybakina vs Jabeur Prediction

We have ourselves a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon women’s final. Elena Rybakina defeated Ons Jabeur to win the Venus Rosewater Dish last summer, and the pair will square off in another intriguing matchup, this time in the quarterfinals.

The Kazakh was bundled by nerves at the start of the tournament when she opened up play on Centre Court on Day 2 of the Championships. With the eyes of the world fixated on her, including a watching Roger Federer in the Royal Box, Rybakina dropped the opening set to feisty American Shelby Rogers. That was only the faintest of hope that Rybakina’s opponent had of springing an upset, as she quickly asserted her dominance on serve to cruise into the second round.

Rybakina accounted wins over the relentless French counterpuncher Alize Cornet, who battled fearlessly but fell in two sets (things could have turned differently were it not for a nasty fall that Cornet suffered at the end of the second set). Her best performance came in the third round when she romped past British No. 1 Katie Boulter for the loss of two games. Rybakina’s spot in the quarterfinal came courtesy of a retirement win over Beatriz Haddad Maia who called it quits after five games due to a back injury.

Ons Jabeur did not receive that sort of luck, but not that she needed it. The Tunisian trailblazer thumped Petra Kvitova 6-0, 6-3 in just 63 minutes to advance into her third straight quarterfinal at Wimbledon. Kvitova, to put it bluntly, did not turn up, and Jabeur’s wicked brand of tennis took Kvitova to the cleaners. Will she be able to repeat it and exact revenge for last year’s final defeat?

Both players have gotten better with each passing round. Rybakina brings so much power with every swing, but she’ll be vulnerable in protracted games. While I do think Rybakina enters the match as a slight favorite, Jabeur’s decision-making with her shot selection will be pivotal. We know Rybakina isn’t the most comfortable in rallies and Jabeur will use her skillset to keep her on the move. Rybakina is also prone to butchering her volleys – her net presence is still a work in progress. Last year, Jabeur completely crumbled under the magnitude of the moment, and having too many shots up her sleeve, she was unsure which one to use. But it could very well be a positive learning experience and we reckon the outcome will swing in her favor this time.
