TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Open as Dominic Thiem takes on Andy Murray in the Round of 64 on Monday, May 2nd, 2022.
Will Dominic Thiem get a first win in his comeback? Will Andy Murray manage to pull through? This will be a fascinating one, where we have two heavyweights regaining their form clashing in the early rounds. Who will triumph and move on to the Round of 32 at the 2022 Madrid Open?
Dominic Thiem has played two matches in his comeback, losing the first in 3 sets and the second in straights, but still playing quite the 2nd set. He’s only getting better from here, and with the success he’s had in Madrid in the past, I think this tournament might just be the one where he starts to gain some of his level back. Andy Murray is no pushover even at this stage in his career, but he hasn’t played anything on the clay, and his level hasn’t exactly gotten too much better in the last year or so, although certainly improving. Thiem has a much higher ceiling and the mastery of the surface, let’s see if he can get his first win of the season and a big one at that as he aims to book his place in the Round of 32 at the 2022 Madrid Open.
Andy Murray hasn’t played too bad of a season, displaying a high level at times, but ultimately really not being able to stay with the top guys. This is a very interesting matchup, with the winner being quite unclear, but Murray most certainly has a say here. He might not love the clay, but he most certainly can play on it, reaching the final of the French Open and lifting a couple of masters titles on the clay. It’s not an ideal matchup for him coming up against Thiem, but being the more consistent player from what we’ve seen so far, he just might have what it takes to come through here at the 2022 Madrid Open.
Dominic Thiem and Andy Murray have met four times before, with Dominic Thiem leading the head to head 2-2. They’ve met four times, with each player winning the meetings you’d expect, Thiem losing out in the two early ones when he was practically a teenager, and winning the next two, one of them still being when Murray was in fact World No. 1. It will be a highly contested contest, where we’ll see a massive test for both players. Can Dominic Thiem find his range once more with his massive hitting and ability to rip a winner from anywhere on the court? Will Andy Murray prove he’s ready to play the clay and get a notable win? Let’s see what happens as the two clash in a very anticipated matchup for a place in the Round of 32 at the 2022 Madrid Open.
