Iga Swiatek withstood a brave fight from Donna Vekic who put every bit of energy and strength into her shots, but still came up short against the world-class talent of the World No. 1. Swiatek won 6-3, 6-4, notching her 14th match win on the trot at the Italian Open. She is on course to collect her third title in a row in Rome, but will no doubt face her biggest challenger in Elena Rybakina in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Rybakina also came through in straight sets, beating a quality opponent in Marketa Vondrousova. The Kazakh nearly made a melee of that second set having led 4-0 at one point and needed to stave off a late comeback to prevail 6-3, 6-3. It’s Rybakina’s best run at this year’s clay swing, but must now emulate her heroics from this year’s Australian Open and Indian Wells where she scored two terrific wins over Swiatek en route to the final. However, the change of surface will be a limiting factor for Rybakina to conjure her fluid and blistering baseline game. Swiatek has that extra second to get her returns into play and it’s something she clearly lacked in her two defeats to the Wimbledon champion. Expect Swiatek to turn the tables this time.
