He has signed up for the 175 Challenger in Bordeaux looking to get sufficient playing time before the French Open. Wawrinka got an opening-round win over Ugo Blanchet, 6-3, 6-1 in just 68 minutes. The 24-year-old who is well outside the world’s top 300 has barely managed to hit the ground running at the Challenger level and was outclassed by the 2015 French Open champion whose presence on these courts has certainly got everyone jumping for joy. But Wawrinka isn’t the only three-time Grand Slam champion in the draw. Andy Murray is also in the thick of the action and got a first-round bye by virtue of being the second seed here. Murray recently captured his first Challenger title in 18 years at Aix-en-Provence, beating Tommy Paul in the final. And after a shock early exit at the Italian Open, he’s looking to get more game time in Bordeaux. However, he doesn’t own a good record against Wawrinka on clay, and even during his peak years, Murray would often tumble to Wawrinka’s sheer shotmaking and power on the surface. Obviously, the two of them are a shadow of their former selves, but this should easily take centre stage as the biggest match on the ATP’s second tier in recent memory. And Wawrinka’s recent level particularly against top 20 opposition has been admirable and valiant. He’ll likely have Murray’s number again on clay.
