Casper Ruud returns to the Geneva Open looking to score a three-peat. Ruud, winner of the last two editions of the ATP 250 event in Switzerland, is 10-4 on clay this season and bagged a 10th ATP crown in Estoril last month even in the midst of his toughest year on Tour. The Norwegian reached the semifinal in his last tournament at the Rome Masters where he lost to Holger Rune in three sets. Ruud got a bye in the first round here and will face the daunting task of taking on an energetic J.J. Wolf in his first match in Geneva. Wolf secured a fine win over Bolivian clay-court specialist Hugo Dellien. While Ruud has never played Wolf before, he’ll be conversant with the American’s game, from his truncated ball toss on serve to his electric forehand. Wolf’s rally tolerance has also gotten better on clay, with the man himself admitting he’s put in the hard yards behind the scenes in order to get in top shape for this year’s clay swing. The Wolf forehand was at its swashbuckling best in blowing Dellien out of sight and Ruud’s objective here is to limit the American’s time on the ball from that wing. But with that said, Ruud has lost 10 matches this season and doesn’t justify the -400 pre-match odds. Wolf is more than capable of taking a set here, he is thriving in these conditions at altitude with the ball zipping through the court so fast. We’re backing him to cover the over 9.5 games spread.
