We have an all-Argentinean affair in Lyon as Sebastian Baez and Pedro Cachin meet for the second time on the European clay this season. Baez won their first clash in Estoril last month in two tight sets, in a very brutal match with some lung-busting exchanges. And I can’t see this one not following the same pattern. Baez is coming off a great win over Marton Fucsovics in a highly tempered affair, with things boiling over at one point where Fucsovics expressed his distaste of Baez’s grunting. Nonetheless, the young Argentine maintained his focus despite squandering two match points at 5-4 up in the second set but ultimately prevailed in the tiebreak. Cachin, for his part, was surprisingly tested by Gael Monfils who is still short on match sharpness. The unseeded Cachin came from a set down to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. This should be a fun one, two players who live and breathe clay. Baez is a stoic competitor and marginally consistent with his baseline game. Cachin is no slouch though, coming off two great runs at the Madrid Challenger and the Madrid Masters. But he looked a little slower with his movement and Baez is primed to have more joy in this matchup for the fourth time.
