Marta Kostyuk was finally able to fulfill her lifelong ambition of winning a WTA title. And it came in her first final at the inaugural ATX Open in Austin, Texas. There wasn’t a lot of expectation on her shoulders when she signed up for the 250 event, but in the kind of form she has been on, Kostyuk was bound to break her duck soon enough. And so it arrived this past week, as she stormed to the title dropping just one set all week. Now the Ukranian will be looking to improve on her 2-2 record at Indian Wells.

It won’t be long before Rebecca Peterson rejoins the winners’ circle. Peterson has already won two titles on the WTA Tour, although injuries and loss of form have played a part in her big fall in recent years. Now the Swede is healthy again and winning for fun. She has reached two finals this year, one at the W60 Orlando ITF and the other in Merida, finishing runner-up both times. Peterson has qualified for the main draw in Indian Wells, beating Simona Waltert and Caroline Dolehide in straight sets.

Marta Kostyuk and Rebecca Peterson have not played each other on the WTA Tour. So Wednesday’s match at Indian Wells will be their first official meeting. Kostyuk made her top-40 debut on the eve of this tournament and hasn’t lost a first-round match this year. She has played some fantastic tennis and is slowly fulfilling her teenage potential. Peterson is not far off from reaching her ceiling judging by her recent renaissance. But I feel this match has just come a little too early for her liking. Kostyuk is poised to advance.
