TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime (2) takes on Jenson Brooksby (WC) in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 5th, 2021.
Will Jenson Brooksby continue to cause upsets as he is making a name for himself here in Washington as he aims to get his biggest win of his career under his belt? Will Felix Auger-Aliassime build on his match win against Andreas Seppi in the Round of 32? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open. Who will it be?
Jenson Brooksby put on a solid and composed upset win against Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 32, beating his more experienced and higher ranked American opponent in straight sets 7-6/7-5. Frances was playing well, but his serve let him down a lot throughout the match, and this gave Jenson the confidence on the return to get some big points and eventually the win under his belt. Jenson is making a name for himself, and he will want to keep this up because he can definitely rise up the rankings if he plays like this every week during this US hard court swing. Jenson will now meet his toughest challenge yet in Felix Auger-Aliassime, and it will be interesting to see if he has enough to cause another upset at the 2021 Washington Open.
Felix Auger-Aliassime came through a very entertaining 3 set win over Andreas Seppi in the Round of 32, coming back from a set down against the experienced Italian to win 2-6/6-2/6-2. The first set was really Felix just getting used to the conditions here and once he found his rhythm he made sure to dominate the rest of the match. Felix will want to come out here and build on his first match as he knows he can go all the way to the Final here at the 2021 Washington Open if his power hitting game is at its best. However, he needs to ensure he’s ready to go right away as he now meets the in form and determined Jenson Brooksby.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jenson Brooksby have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. If this was earlier in the year, I would have predicted Felix to win this match easily. However, with the solid results that Brooksby has been getting under his belt, I see him keeping things tight here. Felix will know that Jenson and him have a similar playing style, and he will have to use all of his experience to get through this match. Jenson has nothing to lose and he will swing for the fences, but Felix will show us why he is the No.15 in the world and Jenson is the No.130 when they are both 20 years old. There are levels to this, and Felix will show this in the end to make his way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open.
