Stefanos Tsitsipas has been in red-hot form this year in 2021, and led the ATP Race to Turin until recently, when he was overtaken by Novak Djokovic. The Greek star has been ultra-consistent this year and after breaking through and reaching his maiden Grand-Slam Final at Roland Garros, will be hoping to go one step further here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. First in his path is the flashy American Frances Tiafoe, a very talented player. Can he stop Tsitsipas here and cause the massive upset?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently ranked a career-high #4 in the ATP world rankings, and is seeded #3 here with the withdrawal of Rafael Nadal. The Greek superstar has been fantastic this season, and has made several breakthroughs, such as winning his first Masters-1000 title in Monte-Carlo and reaching the French Open Final. He has matured greatly as a player and is definitely ready to compete for Majors across all surfaces. In my opinion, his game is tailor made for this surface, and he is a major contender for the title here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. First up for him is the American Frances Tiafoe, who is very talented in his own right and this is bound to be an exciting match for the fans.
Frances Tiafoe is currently ranked #56 on the ATP Tour, and has a career high of #29. The American burst onto the scene as a very talented teenager a few years ago, and after reaching the Quarter-Finals at the Australian Open, big things were expected of him. However, his career has stagnated a bit over the past few years, and he has not reached the heights that many thought he would. His preparation for the 2021 Wimbledon 2021 Championships has been inconsistent, winning a Challenger title in Nottingham, reaching the Quarter-Finals at Queens before losing in the First Round in Eastbourne. Despite his young age, he is very experienced and is a tough opponent, one that Stefanos Tsitsipas should not take lightly here.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 1-0. Surprisingly, the only time that they have played was in 2018 at the Next-Gen Finals, with the Greek winning in straight sets. All things considered, I am expecting a similar result here. While Frances Tiafoe is a very solid player, he has remained stagnant in his development over the past few years, while Tsitsipas has taken off. He is a huge threat to Novak Djokovic here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, and I expect him to begin his campaign with a straight-sets win here.
