Aljaz Bedene came through an extremely tight match against the very strong Egor Gerasimov in the Second Round, beating Gerasimov in 2 sets 6-4/7-6(5). Gerasimov is never an easy player to beat, and Bedene was able to utilize his great rallying game, and his experience against similar opponents to make the match swing in his favour. Aljaz will be very happy with his performance in the Second Round, but he will be also very wary that he will need to be even better in this Quarter-final as he meets a very tough opponent and the top seed in this side of the draw in Taylor Fritz. Can Aljaz Bedene be able to cause the upset here and make his way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Sardegna Open?
Taylor Fritz put on a very strong performance in his opening round match in the Second Round, meeting Andrej Martin and beating him in straight sets 6-2/7-6(4). Taylor Fritz loves clay-courts and he has had a lot of success in his young career in these conditions. The American will be very determined to perform strongly here in Sardegna, as he knows that if he is on top of his game, he should be the favourite for the title here. Taylor Fritz will have to be at his best in this Quarter-final encounter as he meets Aljaz Bedene, a player who he has lost to before and a very experienced player in ATP 250 tournaments.
Taylor Fritz and Aljaz Bedene have met once before, with Aljaz Bedene having won their only prior encounter. They met in the Third Round of the 2020 Cincinnatti Masters where Aljaz Bedene won in two very tight sets 7-6(5)/7-5. This was the first tournament back on the ATP Tour last year once the ATP Tour resumed play, therefore I would not look too far into this match as rustiness came into play. I expect this to be a tight match as both players are very strong in these clay-court conditions. However, at the end of the day, I see Taylor Fritz winning this one as he is in great form this year and he will be determined to continue his path to winning the title at the 2021 Sardegna Open.
