TennisSection previews the 2021 San Diego Open as Casper Ruud (2) takes on Andy Murray in the Round of 16 on Thursday, September 30th, 2021.
Will Casper Ruud move on? Will Andy Murray pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a current top 10 player taking on the former world number one. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 San Diego Open?
Casper Ruud has been playing a little bit on the disappointing end since completing his hattrick of tournaments on the clay. Still, though, he showed promise at the laver cup and I feel like these conditions will suit him. While Murray will be a very tough competitor and the match could go his way as Ruud is not as consistent on hard courts, I feel like Ruud will make fewer errors and be able to play with the right amount of aggression at the right times. It will be a fun contest for sure, and will likely depend on whether or not Murray can dictate some rallies with some backhand to backhand crosscourts. Ruud will want to hope that he and Murray will pull each other around the court more with longer and heavier rallies, picking off short balls he will likely get, he’s a top 10 player for a reason, and I do expect him to tough it out and grab the win to kick off his campaign here at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Andy Murray got a great win today, hitting really clean and solid, serving pretty well to set up this meeting with Casper Ruud. He certainly has a very hard one ahead of him, as Ruud will likely be able to rally for a lot longer and loves to do so, I also think Ruud will be able to rip his forehand much harder when he wants to, allowing him lots of easy points that way. A lot of the match result will also depend on serving, and that’s definitely an area that Ruud could work on, considering that Murray has a good return, it will be interesting to see if he can take advantage of that rather lesser shot on Ruud’s end and set up some points in his favor to challenge him fo a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Casper Ruud and Andy Murray have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s an interesting matchup, if Ruud can get some of Murray’s serves back into play in good positions, then I think he will be able to set up a lot of the points in his favor and dictate play from there, being able to capitalize on opportunities on that end. Murray, however, does for sure have a stronger serve and return, and if he can start off every point strong, I like his chances to pull off the upset here. However, it will for sure be a very tough task to do those things, and I more or less expect Ruud to simply hit better and turn most of the rallies in his favor to get a tough but good start to the 2021 San Diego Open.
