Marseille Open 2021: Daniil Medvedev vs. Jannik Sinner Tennis Preview and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Marseille Open as Daniil Medvedev (1) meets Jannik Sinner (5) in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, March 12 2021.

Will Daniil Medvedev be able to grow the momentum behind his back after he got his fist win after 2 straight losses? Will Jannik Sinner be able to cause a bit upset and get the biggest victory of his career under his belt by beating Daniil Medvedev? We are in for a very exciting and thrilling encounter between these two players, but only one will make their way to the Semi-Finals. Who will it be?

Jannik Sinner has been playing some great tennis here in Marseille, showing us time and time again why he is going to be a future Top 10 player, if not a future World No.1. Sinner beat Gregoire Barrere in the first round in a very tight 3-set match where Sinner was able to maintain his composure in very tight moments to seal the win. In the second round, the match was completely in Jannik Sinners favour from the start. Sinner met Hugo Gaston and absolutely crushed the unorthodox and highly-talented Frenchman, beating him in straight sets 6-4/6-1. Jannik Sinner will be filled with confidence as he plays some superb tennis in these indoor hard-court conditions, and he will be meeting a player who has lost a lot of momentum recently, Daniil Medvedev. Can Jannik Sinner cause the upset and get the biggest victory of his career under his belt?

Daniil Medvedev has gotten back on the positive results train, beating Egor Gerasimov in the second round in straight sets 6-2/6-4. Medvedev lost a lot of momentum after he lost the 2021 Australian Open Final last month, and this was followed by a shocking defeat against Dusan Lajovic just last week at the 2021 Rotterdam Open. Medvedev will become World No.2 on Monday and I am unsure whether he actually cares to put in much effort in these smaller ATP 250 tournaments, as he usually aims to bring out his best tennis in the much bigger tournaments. Will Medvedev play as passively as he did last week in Rotterdam when he was pushed by a very tough opponent, perhaps giving Jannik Sinner the chance to cause the upset, or will the future World No.2 be determined to make a title run here in Marseille?

This is going to be the second encounter between Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner, with Daniil Medvedev having won their only prior encounter. Their last encounter was in this same tournament last year, where Jannik Sinner took the first set 6-1 and looked like the dominating force. However, Daniil Medvedev was able to maintain his composure and finally get the match victory by winning the following two sets 6-1/6-2. One year later to today, Jannik Sinner has improved drastically, and I can definitely see him causing some trouble to some of the biggest players in the world this year. Medvedev is a great player, and will enter here as the favourite on paper. However, at the end of the day, I do not see him putting it all down on the line when the match gets very tight. Jannik Sinner cause the upset here.
