TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Elise Mertens takes on Rebecca Peterson in the Round of 128 on Monday, August 30th, 2021.
Will Elise Mertens go through? Will Rebecca Peterson pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see if Mertens can regroup and show she can be dangerous this year. Who will move on to the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open?
Elise Mertens has had an okay year, although she’s had many early exists in tournaments, she’s still been able to make a few deep runs and even win Wimbledon in doubles. She is definitely the favorite, playing someone who isn’t ranked nearly as high and doesn’t have the experience or results against Mertens. Mertens hasn’t been playing too well, losing early in Toronto and Cincinnati, and not performing too well in singles before those two tournaments either, her opponent on the other hand performed pretty decent. While those things may not sound good for Mertens, she’s still ranked much higher and has the experience, especially when it comes to grand slams. I expect her to be able to play at a higher level once the 2021 US Open starts, and improve her serve as that area of her game has been particularly less effective.
Rebecca Peterson has been playing some pretty good tennis, losing to some top players in recent tournaments in the North American hard-court swing, she definitely has a chance here facing fifteenth seed Elise Mertens. While she is not the favorite purely due to ranking and experience, she has the form advantage and can definitely pull off the upset. The players she beat weren’t too high of a level either, making those wins slightly less significant as well when we look into this match vs. Mertens. She will have to return well, as the serve is an area where Mertens has been struggling, so she should be able to score some opportunities there and potentially get ahold of them if she is able to return aggressively and jump on the point as soon as she can. While she is definitely not the favorite going into this match, she can cause some trouble and potentially pull off the upset as she vies for a spot in the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open.
Elise Mertens and Rebecca Peterson have met twice before, with Elise Mertens leading the head to head 2-0. Their most recent meeting was on the hard courts of North America last year in Cincinnati, with Mertens winning in a dominant 6-0 6-2. The fact that Mertens has a positive head to head and the most recent match was a massacre definitely does give her even more of an edge, however, Peterson has been playing much better in the last few weeks and Mertens has been playing much worse. Still, I expect Mertens to overcome the trouble and resistance she will inevitably face and score a solid win to gain some momentum and confidence leading to the Round of 64 at the 2021 US Open.
