TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Alex de Minaur takes on Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 11th, 2021.
Will Alex de Minaur finally show some consistency? Will Nikoloz Basilashvili continue playing some solid tennis? This match will be an interesting one, where we have two players who are quite close in level at the moment going at it. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Toronto Open?
Nikoloz Basilashvili came through from behind against the next-gen star in Jenson Brooksby, serving at a remarkable 85% and claiming 6/11 break points. He’s been playing a pretty high level all year, having a few inconsistent streaks, when playing someone like Alex de Minaur, it’s very important that you can play aggressive tenns tennis with minimal unforced errors, this is something that Nikolaz likes to do. For that reason, I would pin him as the favorite to come through this match, especially considering that Alex de Minaur is actually very similar to Jenson Brooksby in terms of how they play. De Minaur is very fast, so Basilashvili should rely on using his powerful groundstrokes to push de Minaur back behind the baseline, and then follow them up with good closing plays and patterns. If he is able to do this along with serving effectively, then I like his chances tomorrow.
Aex de Minaur got a BYE in the first round, while he’s had his moments this year, for the most part his performances have been rather lack-luster. Alex de Minaur plays his best when he’s aggressive, playing aggressive is also the play against Nikoloz Basilashvili. De Minaur absolutely has the game to beat him, but considering he isn’t exactly in form and Basilashvili is also able to damage his game quite a bit, I would not pit him as the favorite for this match despite the ranking difference. Alex de Minaur has not been playing the way that he wants to be as of late, aside from a few occasions such as in Eastbourne, where he played some brilliant attacking tennis on the grass and moved beautifully. This is what he’ll need to start doing again if he wants to be able to come through tomorrow and in the future.
Alex de Minaur and Nikoloz Basilashvili have met once before, with Alex de Minaur leading the head to head 1-0. Their one and only meeting came this year several months ago, with de Minaur getting a straightforward win, 6-2 6-4. This definitely does prove that de Minaur can absolutely take home the win tomorrow, but it doesn’t guarantee anything at all, Basilashvili has been playing much better as of late, better than in that match they played against one another. I expect a close contest, although Basilashvili’s aggressive groundstrokes will probably be too much for de Minaur to work around tomorrow considering his current form. It’ll be a good match tomorrow to see who goes through to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Toronto Open.
