TennisSection previews the 2021 Madrid Open as Aslan Karatsev meets Alexander Bublik in the Round of 16 on Thursday May 6th, 2021.
A potential blockbuster is on our hands here in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Madrid Open. Aslan Karatsev who has seemingly come out of nowhere to become a world-beater will face Alexander Bublik, one of the most talented yet unpredictable men on the ATP Tour. Regardless of the outcome this is sure to be a great match, who will win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here in Madrid?
Aslan Karatsev is currently ranked a career-high #27 and has truly been the surprise package for 2021. After spending the majority of his time on the Challenger Tour, he burst onto the scene by reaching the Australian Open Semi-Finals as a Qualifier, and then winning his first career title in Dubai. He then proved that he was a capable player on clay by defeating Novak Djokovic en route to the Serbia Open Final, where he narrowly lost to Matteo Berrettini. The Russian has carried that momentum here to the 2021 Madrid Open, impressively coming from a set down to defeat Diego Schwartzman in the Second Round. With this current form, he enters this match against Alexander Bublik as the favorite, but it will not be easy.
Alexander Bublik is one of the most talented young players on the ATP Tour, but for the first few years of his career was better known for his unpredictable play and bad on court behavior. Now ranked #44, he has seemingly matured greatly as a player, with consistent results propelling him into the top 50 for the first time. He has been fantastic so far here at the 2021 Madrid Open, defeating Marton Fucsovics and Denis Shapovalov to reach this stage with some focused play. If he can keep his motivation and focus high he will be tough to beat, but enters this match against Aslan Karatsev as the underdog due to his opponent’s great form recently.
This will be the first meeting between the two players, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. Both men are in fine form but I am going with Aslan Karatsev to get the win here. Alexander Bublik is certainly capable of winning, but while he has matured greatly as a player, it is still very difficult to predict exactly what version of him we will get. If he is fully locked in, and the Russian has an off-day, there is a chance of an upset but the smart money here is on Aslan Karatsev getting the win here and advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Madrid Open.
