Paris Masters 2021: Andrey Rublev vs. Taylor Fritz Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Paris Masters as Andrey Rublev takes on Taylor Fritz in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021.

Will Andrey Rublev prevail? Or will Taylor Fritz pile more misery on the Russian’s appalling form? We preview this intriguing second-round match from the 2021 Paris Masters.

Andrey Rublev’s alarming slump continued at his home tournament in St. Petersburg. He fell in the quarterfinals to the unheralded Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets. That is now two wins from six from Rublev. There is certainly no reason to panic from the Rublev camp just yet, but this dramatic loss of form has turned into a mini crisis. His five-set loss to Frances Tiafoe at the US Open sapped all his energy, and he hasn’t been the same player ever since. At this juncture, Rublev has one eye on the off-season, but needs to refocus for two big events remaining on the calendar, starting with the Paris Masters against the in-form Taylor Fritz.

While Rublev suffered a chastening defeat to van de Zandschulp in St. Petersburg, Taylor Fritz had a broadly impressive week in Russia’s second city. Fritz staved off the challenges of Tommy Paul, the perpetually tough John Millman and the big-hitting Jan-Lennard Struff to reach his first final of the season. Unfortuantely for the lanky Amreican, he ran into an inspired Marin Cilic who cruised in three sets. Still, Fritz has carried that rich vein of form into the Paris Masters. He opened up his account in Bercy with first-round win over Lorenzo Sonego. The 24-year-old rallied from losing the first set to win 3-6 6-2 6-3 in an hour and 52 minutes of play.

Andrey Rublev leads the head-to-head 2-1, winning their most recent meeting at the 2021 Dubai Championships in routine fashion. He had also beaten Taylor Fritz at the Next Gen ATP Finals three years ago. Fritz’s only win came in their very first meeting in 2018 in Indian Wells. It would be tempting to pick Fritz to win here based on recent results. Rublev looks lost and toothless. But I think the Paris Masters is the kind of tournament he should be able to locate his GPS and return to winning ways.
