TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Novak Djokovic takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, July 28th, 2021.
Will Alejandro Davidovich Fokina shock us all as he aims to get the biggest win of his career here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics? Will Novak Djokovic cruise through yet another match as he aims to get one step closer to the Gold medal? Both players are very entertaining to watch and it will be a fun match, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina came through a very tight 3 set match against John Millman in the second round, beating the Australian 6-4/6-7/6-3. The match was so close from start to finish and I am sure that either player could have won if one or two points went differently. Alejandro is definitely a tough player to beat, however, he is mainly at his best on clay courts. Here on the hard courts of Tokyo, he will have to hope for the performance of a lifetime from his end and a very sub-par performance from Novak Djokovic if he is to make the Quarter-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Novak Djokovic cruised through his second round match against Jan-Lennard Struff, beating the German in straight sets 6-4/6-3. Novak Djokovic is not having any issues with coming onto hard courts after Wimbledon and he still looks like the favourite for the Gold medal here in Tokyo. Novak is just on another level than anyone else at the moment and he will know that it is all about gradually improving his game after every match as he meets tougher and tougher opponents. Novak will not want to waste time in these earlier rounds, especially against the likes of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to get himself into the Quarter-Finals.
Novak Djokovic and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina have met 1 time before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 1-0. They met earlier this year in Rome where Djokovic won easily 6-2/6-1. That was on clay, which is Fokina’s best surface, and now that we are on hard courts, Djokovic’s best surface, he will also stand no chance in this match. Novak is not known for losing sets early on in tournaments as he focused a lot on quick matches to ensure he can recover at his best for much tougher opponents, and he will do the same here. Novak will win in straights to get his way into the Quarter-Final of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
