Emma Raducanu was back in action for the first time in almost two months and the Briton did not have any fitness issues in beating Danka Kovinic 6-2 6-3 in just 81 minutes. Despite going down 0-2 in both sets, Raducanu still showcased flashes of brilliance to keep the Montenegrin at bay. She will to equal her best showing at Indian Wells (third round in 2022) when she faces Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette.

Magda Linette, meanwhile, had a bye in the first round and will therefore play in her first match in almost two weeks. Linette has been slow off the blocks since her scintillating run to the Australian Open semifinals. The Pole was fortunate to escape Panna Udvardy in Merida and was sent packing at the first hurdle in Austin. Regardless of her exploits in Melbourne, this will be a different challenge for Linette at Indian Wells where she has never advanced beyond the second round.

From the thrills of her Australian Open run, Linette has come crashing down to earth with a couple of early exits in February. Her performances have clearly not been up to the standards she set in Melbourne. We like the fit-again Raducanu to string back-to-back wins for the first time this season at Indian Wells.
