TennisSection previews the 2023 Australian Open as Aryna Sabalenka takes on Magda Linette in the semifinal on Thursday, January 26, 2023.
Aryna Sabalenka is now just two matches away from becoming Grand Slam singles champion. But the Belarusian knows the danger in her wait as she prepares to face Australian Open giant-killer Magda Linette in an intriguing semifinal clash. Who will prevail?
Aryna Sabalenka scored her ninth straight win of the 2023 season. Despite losing five of six meetings against Donna Vekic, Sabalenka came into the match on the back of an undefeated streak this year. She was able to turn the tide in this matchup, breaking Vekic’s serve five times and tallying over 70% of points won behind both her first and second serves. Not even her nine double faults could tarnish a complete performance by the Belarusian who is now two matches away from becoming another first-time Grand Slam winner on the women’s tour. Will she end the fairytale run of Magda Linette?
At the start of the Australian Open, we backed a Polish player to make it this far, but certainly, nobody saw this run coming from Magda Linette. Following Iga Swiatek’s shock exit in the fourth round, Linette has kept the Polish flag flying high in Melbourne, scoring one odds-defying win after another en route to her first Grand Slam semifinal. Regardless of the outcome against Aryna Sabalenka, this fortnight has been truly unforgettable for the 30-year-old.
Aryna Sabalenka leads Magda Linette 2-0 in their head-to-head. Sabalenka dominated both matches including their most recent match at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Having overcome her serving yips, Sabalenka has delivered near-perfect performances in 2023. Linette’s run has been mesmeric, but if Sabalenka continues to play at such a frenetic pace, it is hard to see her not making the Australian Open final.
