TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Emma Raducanu takes on Leylah Fernandez in the Final on Saturday, September 11th, 2021.
We are in for an incredible Final here at the 2021 US Open between two youngsters who have just destroyed the entire field here in New York. Will it be the 19-year-old, No.73, Leylah Fernandez to win her maiden Grand Slam title? Will it be the Brit, 18-year-old, No.150, qualifier Emma Raducanu to win her maiden Grand Slam title? Both of these girls have shown that experience does not matter, and that they can compete with the best. However, only one will come out of this match as the 2021 US Open Champion. Who will it be?
Leylah Fernandez came through a hard-fought Semi-Final against the heavy favourite and in form, Aryna Sabalenka, beating her in 3 sets 7-6/4-6/6-4. Leylah has shocked us all this week match after match, being able to raise her level as she has met tougher opponents. You could say that Aryna should have won that match as she did not play to her best level, but Leylah also made sure she did not. Leylah Fernandez iis making a name for herself and shocking the world, but she will know that she will be remembered in the history books even more if she is able to beat Emma Raducanu here at the 2021 US Open to win the title.
Emma Raducanu was superb throughout her entire Semi-Final match, destroying Maria Sakkari with ease in straight sets 6-1/6-4. Emma Raducanu was in cruise control and she saves 7/7 break points when Sakkari had a chance. Emma is solid on her serve and has an amazing all round game. Raducanu is yet to lose a set throughout the last three weeks, including qualifying, and she will know that coming into this Final here at the 2021 US Open, she will have her toughest challenge yet in Leylah Fernandez. However, she will back herself to get the job done based on her performance over the last 3 weeks.
Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Both of these youngsters have shocked the world over the last few weeks, dominating the Women’s Singles draw and making a name for themselves. Leylah has been able to beat some big names and show us that she is a star for the future, and Emma has done the same in her first year as a professional on the WTA Tour. Leylah, and many, will be thinking that she has won a title before and has a slight edge in experience so she should probably win this match. However, having watched how Leylah plays, I think she is beatable by someone who can rally hard. Emma has shown this week that she can win points easy on her serve, and that she is not afraid of staying in long rallies. I think the crowd will be with the Brit as well a little bit more, and these things give an edge when entering your first Grand Slam Final, especially here at the 2021 US Open.
