TennisSection previews the 2022 Hamburg Open as Lorenzo Musetti takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the quarterfinal on Friday, July 22nd, 2022.

There will be entertaining rallies galore on Friday at the Hamburg Open as two fine shot makers go toe-to-toe for a place in the semifinals. Will it be Lorenzo Musetti’s one-handed backhand that comes out on top against Alejandro DavidovichFokina?
Lorenzo Musetti got the better of Emil Ruusuvuori in his previous match to reach the quarterfinals of the Hamburg Open on his debut appearance. The young Italian produced the perfect start as he broke the Finn in the first game of the match. There on, he would save a pair of break back points on his serve before going on to wrap up the set 6-4. In the second set, there were plenty of cat and mouse games as both players struggled to stay consistent on serve. Musetti though held his nerve in the key moments and completed the win on his 7th match point. Next up is Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, for his part, is yet to drop a set at the Hamburg Open and improves to 11-7 on clay this season. The flamboyant Spaniard defeated Slovakian qualifier JozefKovalik 6-2 6-2 in 71 minutes. He hammered five aces and did not face a single break point in a domineering performance. It will be his fifth quarterfinal of the season when he takes on Lorenzo Musetti.
Lorenzo Musetti and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Friday’s quarterfinal meeting at the Hamburg Open will be their first official meeting. Both players have saved their best tennis for the clay courts. Davidovich Fokina famously reached the finals of the Monte Carlo Masters in April, and it seems that he hasn’t been able to get over the emotional toll of that monumental achievement. I still think he will have better days in the remaining few months of the season, but I have been overly impressed by Musetti’sdecision-making on the surface this year and I am backing him to overcome the world No. 35.
