Alex Molcan was involved in one of the most grueling matches of the ATP Hamburg Open as he knocked out defending champion Pablo Carreno Busta in three sets. Prior to the match, almost every statistic possible was in Carreno Busta’sadvantage. The Spaniard was the most decorated player in the draw with a 10-3 record at the event. He had also won his last 10 sets consecutively. But the Slovakian left hander saved a remarkable 13 out of 16 break points and ended Busta’s run in a two-hour 30-minute battle in three sets.

Borna Coric, for his part, advanced into his first quarterfinal on the ATP tour since March last year. It also follows up his recent title triumph at the Parma Challenger in June. After spending nearly a year nursing a shoulder injury, Coric is back playing superbly again. While it has taken him a while to find his feet, the Croatian star is reaping the rewards of undergoing surgery. Coric will now look to overcome the talented lefty Alex Molcanfor a place in the semifinals of the Hamburg Open.

Alex Molcan and Borna Coric have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Coric has rekindled his season after that confidence-boosting title win in Parma. His decision to play at the Challenger level has certainly help his fitness too. He looks fitter and energetic across the baseline. Coric was once touted as the future men’s No.1, but has since been overtaken in that department by his peers. He certainly possesses top-10 level tennis and will need to showcase it in the second half of the season. At the Hamburg Open though, he has looked in fine spirits and is a slight favorite to dodge the Slovak.
