TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Jannik Sinner takes on John Millman in the Round of 64 on Sunday, October 10th, 2021.
Will Jannik Sinner move on? Will John Millman pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a next-gen star taking on a very experienced player. Who will move onto the Round of 32 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Jannik Sinner has been playing great tennis, having just defended his 2020 Sofia Open Title, taking out Gael Monfils in the final. With a high level of tennis like that, with additional results all throughout the year on hard courts, he is the clear favorite in this matchup against Millman. It’s most certainly a very interesting matchup, and I expect a fun match, however, Sinner just plays too big of a game for John Millman to be able to defend much, and I feel like a lot of his balls will come back short for Sinner to be able to simply put them away and hold serve easily. While Sinner is still not the most consistent player, for the most part, he shows a pretty good level of play, let’s see if he can bring his level here to the 2021 Indian Wells Open and move on.
John Millman put on a solid and composed performance against the in form Jack Sock in his opening match here in Indian Wells, coming through in 3 sets. This was a very important win for the Australianw ho has been struggling with wins as of recent. John is a great all round player, with a good serve, good forehand and backhand. John is also able to play long and draining rallies. However, he has been very inconsistent in the last few months and he is just not where he needs to be both physically and mentally in my opinion to come into a tournament like Indian Wells and knock out one of the top seeds in Jannik Sinner.
Jannik Sinner and John Millman have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. As I mentioned earlier, it just isn’t a good matchup for Millman. While he still has the potential to pull out some magic, Sinner is simply too consistent at the moment, and I feel like Millman won’t get any opportunities to really push him at all, even if he does, Sinner will eventually just turn the tide in the rallies and easily take over. Let’s see if the 2021 Sofia Open champion and heavy favorite to win this match can get a good start to his campaign here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and show that he has the level to be up there with the big boys.
