TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Andreas Seppi takes on Denis Kudla in the Round of 64 on Wednesday, June 30th 2021.
Can the American in Denis Kudla continue his miraculous run? Can Andreas Seppi create some momentum for himself and finally get another good slam run? This contest will be an interesting one to see if Kudla can handle the occasion and manage to storm past Seppi to make it to the Round of 32.
Denis Kudla had a miraculous win today, coming back from 2 sets to love down over 2021 French Open quarterfinalist Davidovic Fokina. At 28 years old, he’s tied his best result at Wimbledon with a second round, in 2019 he had to deal with Novak Djokovic, this year though, he has a legitimate chance of making it through. For such a tough and long match, his serving numbers were relatively high, I think if he can stay solid on serve and just wait for opportunities, he could potentially make it through, although he definitely isn’t the favorite, especially with how long and tough today’s match was, both mentally and physically, although it should give him some confidence and him coming through would definitely not be the most surprising thing in the world.
Andreas Seppi had to battle a little bit today, although nowhere near as much as Denis Kudla. He stormed back today from a set down to knock Joao Sousa out of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. His service numbers were a little flat, making only 63% of them and winning only 65% of them. While Seppi is the favorite going into this matchup, if he’s a little flat, I think he will lose. He has to stay solid and play some good tennis, especially keeping an eye on that first serve and make sure to command the numbers off that area of his game. If he is able to stay solid and grasp opportunities when they come, I think he’ll be the one moving on to the Round of 32.
Denis Kudla and Andreas Seppi have met one time before, with Andreas Seppi leading the head to head 1-0. Their only meeting was at the 2016 edition of the Australian Open, with Seppi winning in 3 tight sets. This doesn’t really help us determine who will win tomorrow, as it was 5 years ago and the match was relatively close, but both players should be familiar with each other as they’ve both been on the tour for a decent bit, especially Seppi who is a veteran of the tour. I do think he’ll be able to come through tomorrow, as he’ll probably have more energy and a solid level from him should be enough, either way, it will be an interesting contest.
