Home favorite Roberto Bautista Agut will need to be on his toes right from the off when he takes on America’s fast-rising star Jenson Brooksby in a tough first-round match at the Madrid Open. Incidentally, Bautista Agut’s last competitive match was against Brooksby in a three-set defeat in Miami. So can the Spaniard avenge that loss?
Roberto Bautista Agut will be playing on home soil at the Madrid Open. But the veteran Spaniard hasn’t played his best tennis at the Caja Magica in recent years. He has failed to scale the second round in his last four editions, losing on his last outing to John Isner. The 34-year-old last featured towards the end of March at the Miami Masters where he lost to Jenson Brooksby (his Madrid opponent). He pulled out from events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona from a reported wrist injury. It will be curious to see whether he has fully recovered from the issue when he renews his rivalry against the young American.
Jenson Brooksby, meanwhile, did not have a great start to theclay-court season. Unlike a host of ATP players, Brooksby was among the few names that kick-started their clay adventure on home territory. The 21-year-old lost in the first round of Houston to compatriot J.J. Wolf. Brooksby, who sits comfortably in the world’s Top 50, elected to sit out from high-profile events such as Monte Carlo and Barcelona, and instead chose to begin his European clay-court swing at the Madrid Open.
Roberto Bautista Agut and Jenson Brooksby have played oncebefore their first-round match at the Madrid Open. Brooksbydefeated the Spaniard in a thrilling three-setter at the Miami Masters. Surprisingly, both players have been winless since that match. Brooksby has lost his last two matches while Bautista Agut was out of action for the entire month of April due to injury. This could be a cagey affair as both players try to adjust to the grind of European clay. Bautista Agut’s versatility and experience could be valuable to turn the tide, but the confident Brooksby is worth backing as the underdog in this matchup.
