TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Barbora Krejcikova takes on Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round on Sunday, January 23rd, 2022.
Barbora Krejcikova looks to reach her maiden quarterfinal at the Australian Open. But she will have her hands full when she takes on two-time champion Victoria Azarenka. Both players are hitting the ball extremely well. However, will it be the craft of Krejcikova or the power of Azarenka that comes out on top?
Barbora Krejcikova fought back from a set and a break down to defeat Jelena Ostapenko in three sets. In a battle between past and current French Open champions, it was the Latvian’s aggression that bamboozled Krejcikova. The Czech would then receive a time violation for a lengthy toilet break between sets for a broken necklace. Krejcikova did not take it lightly for that intervention from the chair umpire, but she did keep her temper in check. The fourth seed would go on a tear as she rallied to win 2-6 6-4 6-4 to set up a mouthwatering showdown against Victoria Azarenka.
Victoria Azarenka advanced into the Round of 16 of the Australian Open after delivering a 6-0 6-2 beatdown to Elina Svitolina. The two-time former champion was unbeaten in her last four meetings against Svitolina, and the Ukrainian continues to falter in this matchup. Svitolina’s counterpunching game bore no fruit as a relentless Azarenka flashed one winner after another to close out victory in just over an hour. She is now looking to reach her first quarterfinal in these parts since 2016.
Victoria Azarenka leads Barbora Krecikova 1-0 in their head-to-head. The Belarusian won their only meeting at the 2020 Ostrava Open in straight sets. Azarenka is in full stride at this year’s Australian Open and looks almost unstoppable. She has dropped a combined total of nine games in three matches. But I do expect Krejcikova to push her to the limits since she will be the highest seed Azarenka is facing before the quarterfinals. Will the Czech’s quality and intensity be enough halt Azarenka’s trail? I doubt.
