TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as Alexander Zverev (5) meets Lorenzo Sonego in the Second Round on April 14th, 2021.
Can Lorenzo Sonego continue his fantastic run in recent weeks with the huge upset here? Or will fifth seeded German Alexander Zverev march on here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters in his quest for a second Masters-1000 title on clay? This is set to be a very exciting match between one of the top players in the world in Zverev and a fast rising Italian star. Who will advance here?
Alexander Zverev is currently ranked #6 in the ATP world rankings and has firmly established himself as one of the top players in world tennis. However, his 2021 season has not gone according to plan thus far. A series of inconsistent results including a First Round exit at the Miami Masters earlier this month, he will be desperate to get his season back on track. More well known for his hard court achievements, he has been surprisingly good on clay throughout his career, claiming five ATP titles including the Madrid Masters event. While he enters this match as the overwhelming favorite, he will have to be careful. This will be his first clay court match for the season and his opponent Lorenzo Sonego is in red-hot form on the surface.
Lorenzo Sonego has been in fantastic form recently, winning the title in Sardegna and reaching the Fourth Round at the Miami Masters the week before. He was outstanding last week in claiming his second career ATP title, and will be looking to build on that performance here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Open. Currently ranked a career-high #28 in the world, he has upset top ranked players before (including his demolition of Novak Djokovic last year) and never backs down from a challenge. The Italian was outstanding in his First Round win over the talented Marton Fucsovics and even though he is the underdog here against Alexander Zverev, he definitely should not be counted out. The German is one of the very best players in the world but he has been known to struggle early on in tournaments, and against an opponent in this sort of form could be strongly tested.
This will be the first time that the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. While it may seem like a mismatch on paper due to their vastly different rankings and records, this match should be much closer than many expect. In a normal scenario, Alexander Zverev would be heavily favored to win but many factors are suggesting that this is not necessarily the case here. He has been in poor form recently, has not played a clay court match yet for the season and is facing an in-form opponent. Despite all of these factors, I am still backing Zverev to win, but barely. Lorenzo Sonego is a fighter and will keep it close, perhaps even sneaking a set, but the German should be able to just do enough to scrape the win and advance to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
