Madrid Open 2022: Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Lucas Pouille Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Madrid Open as StefanosTsitsipas takes on Lucas Pouille in the second round on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022.

Stefanos Tsitsipas begins his quest to win a second Masters 1000 title on clay at the Madrid Open. The Monte Carlo champion will play French wild card Lucas Pouille who authored an upset win over Karen Khachanov on Monday. Who will prevail?

With seven clay-court wins this season and a Masters title from Monte Carlo, Stefanos Tsitsipas is the most in-form player heading to the Madrid Open. His inability to crack the Alcarazcode continues to haunt him (he is 0-3 against the Spaniard) having lost to the young Spaniard in Barcelona a fortnight ago. But Tsitsipas will avoid the 18-year-old until at least the final. The Greek has managed to return to the winner’s circle after a very nervy start to the season – losing in the semifinals of Australian Open and finals of Rotterdam. Having received a bye in the first round, Tsitsipas will face French wild card Lucas Pouille.

Lucas Pouille, for his part, answered his critics with a big win over Karen Khachanov. Pouille’s wild card entrant had received strong criticism from a certain Fernando Verdasco. But he showed his class in taking out the Russian power hitter in straight sets. The Frenchman garnered two breaks of serve, whilst also snuffing away seven opportunities on his own delivery. Pouille is currently working with a new coach in Felix Mantilla and is eyeing a return to the lofty heights of the sport. Can he reach the third round of the Madrid Open for the first time?

Stefanos Tsitsipas leads the head-to-head over Lucas Pouille 2-0. He defeated the Frenchman in their last meeting in Marseille last season. Tsitsipas, who is a former finalist at the Madrid Open, is looking to win his 25th match of the season. The Greek has played himself into form in recent weeks after a subpar month in North America. If Tsitsipas can maintain that fluency in his ground strokes, he should be expected to coast into the third round.
