TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime (12) meets Evgeny Donskoy in the First Round on Monday August 30th, 2021.
Will this be the year that the young Canadian superstar finally breaks out at a Grand Slam? Felix Auger-Aliassime is possibly the best player in history to have never won an ATP title, and he has been teasing us with his potential for quite a few years now. He has the game to beat anyone, but tends to struggle as soon as the pressure is on. First up for him here at the 2021 US Open is Russian Qualifier Evgeny Donskoy who shouldn’t pose much of a threat. Can FAA get the convincing win and build some momentum for a deep run here in New York?
Felix Auger-Aliassime is ranked #15 on the ATP Tour and is the 12th seed here at the 2021 US Open. The Canadian has long been considered one of the most promising young players on the ATP Tour, and it is shocking that he is still only 21 years of age. He has already reached an astonishing eight ATP Finals which some may say is a huge achievement, but it is also concerning that he continually falls at the final hurdle. He has all the physical tools to win these big events, but the mental side continues to let him down. If he plays to the best of his ability his dynamic game is well equipped to take him on a deep run here in Flushing Meadows and he enters this match against Evgeny Donskoy as the big favorite.
Evgeny Donskoy entered the 2021 US Open via the Qualifying Rounds, and is currently ranked #152 in the world. The former top 65 player has seen his ranking slide over the past couple seasons and will be hoping to get his career back on track. However, the draw has not been kind to him as he will face the talented Felix Auger-Aliassime in the First Round, a match that he is expected to struggle in. Even more concerning for the Russian is the fact that he didn’t look convincing in the Qualis, a fact that does not bode well for his chances here. He is the massive underdog here against FAA and it will take a titanic effort for him to make this competitive, despite his opponent’s inconsistency.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I expect it to be a quick one, and will result in a straight-sets win for Felix Auger-Aliassime. Simply put, he is on another level to his opponent Evgeny Donskoy, and I expect that the result will reflect that. Donskoy is no slouch, but FAA has established himself as a top 20 player and even though he tends to struggle under pressure, he should still have way too much quality for his opponent here. FAA will win and advance to the Second Round of the 2021 US Open.
