TennisSection previews the 2021 Geneva Open as Casper Ruud (3) meets Dominik Koepfer (LL) in the Quarter-finals on Thursday, May 20th, 2021.
Will Dominik Koepfer cause another upset as he looks to beat a very experienced and strong clay court player to make his way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Geneva Open? Will Casper Ruud cruise through another match as he did in his first match here? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Semi-finals at the 2021 Geneva Open. Who will it be?
Dominik Koepfer came through a very tight 3-set match against Feliciano Lopez, beating the experienced Spaniard 7-5/6-7/6-3. Dominik is a very underrated player and I think people forget how good he was at the 2019 US Open and also in the clay court swing of 2020, pushing the likes of Novak Djokovic to their limit. Dominik Koepfer since then has had his ups and downs, but he should still not be discounted in these smaller ATP 250 tournaments. With two solid wins under his belt here in Geneva this week, I am sure that Dominik will be confident in his ability to cause yet another upset against Casper Ruud at the 2021 Geneva Open.
Casper Ruud cruised through his first match here in Geneva, beating Tennys Sandgren in straight sets 7-5/6-2. Ruud is great on clay and he showed us both his great movement around the court, but also his amazing raw power which allowed him to dictate the majority of the rallies throughout the match. Casper Ruud will be very confident in his ability to win the title here in Geneva, especially that the likes of Roger Federer are out of the tournament already. However, Casper Ruud will have to ensure his game is at its best as he meets a motivated and confident Dominik Koepfer in the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Geneva Open.
Casper Ruud and Dominik Koepfer have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. If this was 2019 I would have expected for this match to be a very tight 3-setter where both players could win. However, in 2021, Casper Ruud is the vastly superior player. Dominik has had to play so much here already in Geneva, coming through qualifying and playing two matches, therefore I expect for some wear and tear to be affecting his game. Casper is young, energetic, and so powerful. Therefore, I expect him to dictate the match and make his way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Geneva Open.
