Australian Open 2023: Elena Rybakina vs. Aryna Sabalenka Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2023 Australian Open as Elena Rybakina takes on Aryna Sabalenka in the final on Saturday, January 28, 2023.

The Daphne Akhurst Memorial trophy is up for grabs on Saturday as towering Kazakh Elena Rybakina battles the energetic Aryna Sabalenka for the right to be called Australian Open champion. Who will claim the biggest prize of the Australian summer series?

Elena Rybakina came from a break down to extinguish Victoria Azarenka’s hopes of returning to the Australian Open final for the first time since 2013. Women’s tennis is experiencing a change of the guard as the up-and-coming players lay their stakes at the biggest tournaments. One of those is Elena Rybakina, who burst onto the scene three years ago, and is now strongly in contention to win her second Major title following last year’s Wimbledon exploits. Can the six-footer from Kazakhstan serve her way to the title on Saturday against another Belarusian in Aryna Sabalenka?

Aryna Sabalenka, for her part, ended the fairytale run of Poland’s World No. 45 Magda Linette, beating her 7-6 6-2. Defeat does not tarnish Linette’s reputation one bit. The 30-year-old surpassed all pre-tournament expectations winning almost every round as the underdog against the WTA’s heavy hitters. But in Sabalenka, she met a player on a higher ceiling and bubbling with consistency. The Belarusian is into her first Grand Slam singles final and could end all those years of agony as she vies to win the title on Saturday.

Aryna Sabalenka leads Elena Rybakina 3-0 in their head-to-head on the WTA Tour. Sabalenka comes in as a slight favorite into Saturday’s final. She’s unbeaten in 2023, having collected her 12th Tour-level title in Adelaide in the lead-up to the Australian Open. Rybakina joined the Grand Slam contender’s conversation following her stunning Wimbledon success last summer, but perhaps not many people backed her to make it this far after landing in the same quarter of the draw as that of No. 1 Iga Swiatek. But after shocking the young Pole, she has garnered everyone’s attention. The Kazakh has hardly put a foot wrong all fortnight, but she will need an absolute top-level performance to beat an in-form Sabalenka. This match has three sets written all over it, and we are backing the hyper-aggressive Sabalenka to have the edge.
